  • Ring shank grips far better than smooth — the right choice for decking, joists and carcassing that mustn't creep or pop.
  • Galvanised is built for exterior and structural first-fix, where a bright nail would rust.
  • Match the length to the timber: as a rule, the nail should pass through the fixed piece and drive a good depth into the timber behind it.
  • Keep a spare fuel cell on the van — running dry mid-ceiling is the classic hold-up.
