A joist hanger carries the end of a joist where it can't just sit on a wall — into a trimmer, a beam or another joist. Get the size and the nailing right and it holds the full rated load for the life of the floor. Get it wrong, or skip nail holes to save time, and you've built in a weak point you can't see. This collection covers galvanised timber-to-timber hangers across the common sizes.

Fitting joist hangers so they hold

  • Match the hanger to the joist so it sits snug — a loose seat lets the joist drop before the hanger takes the load.
  • Fill every nail hole. The load rating assumes it, and part-nailing is the usual reason a hanger pulls.
  • Use proper joist-hanger nails (sherardised/galvanised twist nails), not screws or a couple of round wires.
  • Support the joist tight up into the seat before you nail, so there's no gap under it.
