Wall ties stop a cavity wall behaving like two separate skins. They tie the outer and inner leaves together so the wall acts as one, sharing wind load and staying stable. This collection covers stainless steel ties for standard cavity work.

Building ties in properly

  • Embed each end well into the bed joint of both leaves — a rule of thumb is at least 50mm each side.
  • Set them with a slight fall to the outer leaf and the drip pointing down in the middle, so any water in the cavity runs out, not in.
  • Space them to spec — typically around 900mm across and 450mm up, and closer in at reveals and openings.
  • Keep them clear of mortar droppings bridging the cavity.
