Laminated dust sheet, 12ft x 9ft (3.6m x 2.7m). A cotton-twill dust sheet with a polythene backing – absorbent on top, waterproof underneath.
The best of both sheets: the cotton twill top catches dust and soaks up drips so they don't run, while the polythene backing stops anything soaking through to the floor or carpet beneath. The one to reach for when there's a real spill risk – painting, plastering, anything wet – where a plain cotton sheet would let it through.

Lay it cotton-side up so spills land on the absorbent face and the backing protects the floor. Reusable – shake it out and it's good for the next job. For stairs use the shaped cotton staircase sheet; for heavy traffic, use protection boards.
