Red is the lighter of the two common sizes, sized for 6–10 gauge screws. It sits in a pilot hole and the screw expands it against the sides of the hole, so the fixing grips instead of spinning loose – the go-to for lighter fixings into masonry: battens, brackets, fittings and trim.

Match the drill bit to the plug (a snug hole, not oversized), blow the dust out, tap the plug in flush, then drive the screw. Too big a hole and it just spins. For heavier screws (8–12 gauge), step up to the brown plug.
