Wales & West carpenter's pencils. The flat, oval pencil every trade keeps in a top pocket – and the first thing to go missing on site.
The oval shape is the whole point: it won't roll off a scaffold board or a windowsill, and the wide, flat lead marks clearly on rough timber, plasterboard, blockwork and brick where a round pencil just skids or snaps. Sharpen it with a knife to a chisel point and you get a fine line for setting out or a broad mark for a cut line.
